There are plenty of makeup products for our skin, but they’re not interchangeable. Three of the most common you’ll find in stores and mentioned in beauty tutorials are foundation, primer and BB cream (also called beauty cream). Read on to discover the differences between each of these products and learn which one is right for your own beauty routine!
Foundation
Foundation is exactly as its name implies: it acts as the bottom layer over your skin on which other makeup is applied. By applying foundation, you can create a smooth, even complexion and slightly adjust the shade of your natural skin. Foundation can also hide redness and blemishes, though these are best treated with a separate concealer. A foundation applied above a concealer creates the perfect canvas.
Primer
Skin primer is applied to the face and eyelids before any other makeup product, including foundation, in order to ensure an even application and long-lasting durability. Unlike foundation, primer is not skin-colored and generally has a thin, serum-like consistency. Primer is often used to fill minor wrinkles and bumps to produce a smoother surface. You can wear both primer and foundation, or foundation on its own, but you wouldn’t wear just primer.
BB Cream
BB cream, sometimes called beauty cream or beauty balm, is an all-in-one product that can be used as a moisturizer, primer, foundation and sunblock. It originated in South Korea and quickly spread in popularity thanks to its flexibility. Unlike other types of cosmetics, BB creams can improve the health of skin and protect it from damage – making them one of the best multi-taskers in your makeup bag. There are all different kinds depending on your skin tone and desired level of coverage, making it a must-have for any well-stocked makeup kit.
